Southampton battled into the third round of the FA Cup with a narrow success at League Two Northampton.
Ndiaye Papa Waigo headed Saints ahead and two minutes later crossed for Adam Lallana to nod home the second.
Dean Hammond headed a third from a Morgan Schneiderlin centre but Adebayo Akinfenwa reduced the arrears with Hammond unable to keep the ball out.
Ryan Gilligan made it 3-2 in stoppage time from the spot after Chris Perry handled, but it came too late.
Southampton manager Alan Pardew told BBC Radio Solent:
"At 3-1, I thought we would see the game out and that would be it, but they got a penalty and it flatters the scoreline a little bit.
"You need people to get into the box and with two midfield players scoring, it was great.
"We got through the tie in one hit away from home and we'll take that against any opposition."
Northampton Town manager Ian Sampson tells BBC Radio Northampton:
"I thought it was a fantastic cup tie. In general play we matched them, and I'm pleased with how we played, but in vital parts of the game we didn't do well enough.
"Due to lack of concentration, or mental strength, we concede two before halftime. Then we've got an uphill task on our hands.
"At the defining moments in the game, their free headers and chances they took, with ours, we didn't."
