Taylor grabbed the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute
Ash Taylor's late goal for Tranmere booked them a second round FA Cup clash with Aldershot at the expense of fellow League One side Leyton Orient.
Orient made the early running but only Chris Shuker's free-kick forced a save from visiting keeper Glenn Morris.
Tranmere broke the deadlock with seven minutes to go, Taylor lashing in a low shot following a Shaleum Logan cross.
There was still time for Orient to see a goal disallowed because of a foul on Rovers keeper Luke Daniels.
Tranmere caretaker manager Les Parry told BBC Radio Merseyside:
"That's probably our worst performance in all the games I've been in charge.
"There were flashes of us being ok for about 10 minutes in the first half and again in the second.
"We're going to look hard at the performance because if we produce that again on Saturday, the chances are we'll leave here with nothing."
