Jason Scotland celebrates putting Swansea 2-0 up against FA Cup holders Portsmouth at Fratton Park

Championship side Swansea City dumped FA Cup holders Portsmouth out of the competition thanks to first-half goals from Nathan Dyer and Jason Scotland.

Dyer, on loan from Pompey's arch rivals Southampton, put the Swans in front on 26 minutes firing low past David James.

Scotland doubled the lead from the spot on the stroke of half time after Jordi Gomez was up-ended by Nadir Belhadj.

Swans keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos had to pull off a string of fine saves to keep out the Premier League side.

With Swansea widely hailed as playing the best football in the Championship and Portsmouth struggling in the Premier League an upset was always a possibility.

The hosts did test Swansea's resolve early on when Armand Traore tried his luck from the edge of the box only for Darren Pratley to block the effort.

But the Championship side threatened themselves and on eight minutes, Spanish defender Angel Rangel played a neat one-two with Pratley before firing inches wide.

Then Dyer tested David James in the Portsmouth goal as the Swans got themselves more in control.

And they took a deserved 26th-minute lead when Scotland's ball over the top found Dyer on the edge of the penalty area and the on-loan winger struck low to James' left.

Pompey's first chance came five minutes later when Peter Crouch drilled a shot at Konstantopoulos, who saved well.

The Cup holders were struggling to get back into the game and Jermaine Pennant, making his debut on loan from Liverpool, saw his shot blocked by Alan Tate.

And when it seemed like Pompey were finishing the half the stronger, they fell further behind on the stroke of half-time.

Scotland played a ball to Gomez who was hacked down just inside the box by Belhadj and referee Andre Marriner pointed to the spot.

Top scorer Scotland stepped up to claim his eighth goal in eight games and take his tally to 13 for the season.

Tony Adams hauled off Dave Nugent and Traore for Kanu and Hermann Hreidarsson respectively and Pompey came out strongly in the second half as they looked to keep a grip on the famous trophy.

Konstantopoulos, starting as regular stopper Dorus de Vries was rested, pulled off a fine diving save from Crouch's header as the holders found some urgency in their play.

Belhadj almost made amends for the penalty by delivering a delightful cross, but Crouch could not make contact.

Greek stopper Konstantopoulos then made another superb somehow keeping out Sean Davies.

But his heroics almost turned to embarrassment soon after when he misjudged a bounce and then slipped, but the Swans were given a huge let-off when Kanu failed to take advantage.

Portsmouth were getting caught on the break as they pushed forward and Scotland was denied from putting the game out of sight by the feet of James.

But the Swans had Konstonatopoulos to thank for pulling off fine stops from Pennant and Younes Kaboul as the home side pushed, while Crouch was also denied by the post.
