Port Vale came from 3-1 down in the last 11 minutes to book a place in the second round of the Cup.
Louis Dodds rounded Matt Glennon on 27 minutes to open the scoring for Vale,
Shots from Michael Collins and Ian Craney either side of half-time and a powerful header from Robbie Williams seemed to have Huddersfield in control.
But David Howland's cool chip and a Dodds drive levelled the scores before Marc Richards curled in a 20-yard free-kick to complete Vale's comeback.
