A Jason Demetriou goal ten minutes from time booked Leyton Orient's place in the FA Cup second round at the expense of Colchester United.
Demetriou weaved his way through the home defence before placing a low shot past United keeper Mark Cousins.
Mark Yeates twice went close for the home side but Orient keeper Glenn Morris saved both curling efforts.
After the break Orient's Sean Thornton had a header saved and United's Scott Vernon squandered a gilt-edged chance.
