Andy Bishop spared Bury's blushes with a hat-trick in the last 11 minutes to dash Workington's hopes of an upset. Paul Scott fired the Shakers ahead from a Nicky Adams free-kick on 25 minutes.
Workington levelled when Matthew Berkeley drilled home after being set up by Graham Anthony on the right but Bishop then headed in to make it 2-1.
Bishop's great solo effort put Bury in command and he completed his hat-trick in stoppage time from substitute Andy Mangan's pass.
