Andy Liddell's penalty earned Sheffield United an FA Cup fifth round trip to Arsenal as they beat West Ham 3-1 on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw.

Liddell's low curling free-kick put United in front early on, and was a rare highlight in a poor first half.

West Ham drew level with a Teddy Sheringham penalty after Chris Morgan was sent off for fouling Marlon Harewood just after the hour mark.

Sheringham, Harewood and Carl Fletcher missed penalties before Liddell won it.

The home side took a deserved early lead when Liddell whipped in a low free-kick from just outside the box after Fletcher was adjudged to have fouled Paul Shaw.

West Ham's problems grew when Luke Chadwick limped off with a pulled hamstring, and the Blades almost doubled their lead when Andy Gray nearly pounced on Malky Mackay's weak back-header.

West Ham's only real first-half chances were a Harewood shot over and a Sheringham chance, blocked by Jon Harley, after he took too long to shoot.

The pace of the game picked up after the break, as United's Michael Tonge had a shot blocked by Stephen Bywater just before Sheringham saw a swerving long-range kick go just over the bar.

Blades captain Morgan was given a straight red for hauling down Harewood in the box, and Sheringham calmly slotted home the resulting spot-kick to put West Ham level.

In the dying stages, Chris Powell had to be alert to prevent Tonge's left-wing cross reaching Harley as the game became increasingly tense, and the game went to extra time, with the 10 men of United looking hungrier.

Hayden Mullins wasted the best chance of extra time when he headed over, but the game seemed destined to go to penalties.

Sheringham and Harewood had their kicks saved by Paddy Kenny, with Fletcher striking the bar, before Liddell's effort put United into the fifth round.

  • Blades manager Neil Warnock
"We played some good stuff, we have character and commitment and we created the best chances.

"This is what the FA Cup's all about, two sides going hell for leather with plenty of incidents and we deserved it.

"Arsenal are one of the best teams in Europe but we're not going to Highbury to make up the numbers."

  • West Ham boss Alan Pardew:
"The effort we put in and the support we had up here was fantastic, it's a shame to go out on penalties.

"You have to say that their keeper was terrific and that edged it for them.

"You couldn't fault our players, they put everything into it and also Sheffield United's players were a credit to their club."
