Hartlepool 0-1 Brentford

Brentford goalscorer Isaiah Rankin and Hartlepool's Ritchie Humphies
Isaiah Rankin scored the only goal as Brentford beat 10-man Hartlepool to net a Cup fifth round trip to Southampton.

Hartlepool were a man down for most of the game after Jack Ross was sent off for fouling Stephen Hunt, who saw the resulting penalty saved.

Rankin's shot against the bar and Joel Porter's lob wide were the only other incidents of note in the first half.

Rankin scored the decisive goal just after the break when he headed home Stuart Talbot's corner at the far post.

A low-key fourth round replay burst into life after eight minutes when Ross was sent off for hacking down Hunt, but keeper Dimitrious Konstantopoulos did well to dive to his right and block the penalty.

Both sides resorted to long-ball tactics in blustery conditions, which did not make for particularly entertaining viewing.

Apart from the penalty, the first half was largely incident-free, save for Rankin's shot against the bar and Porter's one serious threat for Hartlepool.

But it was Rankin who drew first blood just after half time, when Talbot's corner was flicked on by Eddie Hutchinson, for the unmarked Rankin to head home.

Substitute Ben May nearly doubled the Bees' lead seconds after coming on but screwed his shot wide.

Ritchie Humphries and Adam Boyd hassled and harassed the Brentford defence and Chris Westwood flashed a header wide as the home side increased the pressure towards the end, but they could not find a way through the Bees defence.

May wasted a great chance to wrap up the victory late on when Konstantopoulos flapped aimlessly at a cross, but he failed to produce a decent shot.

  • Hartlepool manager Neale Cooper

"It was not to be today but when you lose someone like Jack so early it makes it hard for team plans.

"It is hard enough to play Brentford with 11 men but I'm not making excuses. I can't fault my players' effort and we would have loved to have gone to Southampton but I wish Brentford all the best.

"We are disappointed but we have a big game coming up against Luton on Tuesday night and we must just focus on the League now.

  • Brentford manager Martin Allen

"For us to be in the fifth round is a fantastic achievement for this club and I am so pleased for all the players.

"I am delighted for Isaiah Rankin. He has been a great player for this club but was criticised for his miss in the original tie but has come in today and hit the winner.

"Southampton have got really good players, they are better than all my players. They are the favourites next week and will probably win but we'll take 4-5,000 people there and enjoy the day."
