Mansfield had to settle for a draw against Colchester after Carlton Palmer took charge instead of Keith Curle, who was suspended by the Stags on Thursday. The visitors took the lead against the run of play when Greg Halford nodded in after John White's cross had been flicked on by Gavin Johnson.
Mansfield hit back soon afterwards, with Alex John-Baptiste firing home a superb 30-yard volley to equalise.
Mansfield's Derek Asamoah was sent off late on for an awful two-footed tackle.
