Chris Baird closes in on Robert Pires during the cup final |
Northern Ireland Under-21 international Chris Baird earned glowing praise from his Southampton boss Gordon Strachan after the FA Cup final.
Saints manager Strachan sprang a major surprise by naming the 21-year-old from Rasharkin for the showpiece game in Cardiff.
Baird was picked at full-back, just a week after making his full debut in the FA Premiership.
Southampton's usual right-back Paul Telfer was pushed forward into central midfield in a move to stop the runs of Arsenal's Robert Pires and Thierry Henry.
The day ended in disappointment as Arsenal won 1-0 but Baird earned acclaim for a polished defensive display which included two goal-line clearances.
Strachan felt his decision to play Baird had been the correct one and was satisfied with how the 21-year-old performed.
"It was a commendable display," said Strachan.
"He made his full debut last week at Maine Road but we felt we needed more strength down that side because that is an area where Arsenal expose you and he was absolutely fantastic."
