Five minutes of madness

Tempers flared after Keown's dismissal
BBC Sport Online analyses the explosive second half of Arsenal's 1-0 win over Liverpool, and reaction to the three dismissals at Highbury.

  • 67 minutes:Martin Keown tangles with Michael Owen as the pair chase a long ball. Owen protests vigorously, believing Keown has denied him the chance to run through on goal.

Referee Mike Riley consults his assistant and dismisses the Arsenal central defender, who protests his innocence.

  • 71 minutes: Suddenly, there's a real bite to every tackle, and Dennis Bergkamp becomes the 10th Arsenal player to be sent off this season, following a nasty studs-up two-footed tackle on Liverpool's Jamie Carragher.

  • 72 minutes: As Bergkamp protests and tempers flare, a coin appears to be thrown from the crowd at Carragher. The Liverpool defender reacts angrily and throws it back into the crowd, warranting an instant red from referee Riley.

    Reaction to the dismissals

    Match referee Mike Riley:
    On Bergkamp
"Dennis Bergkamp attempted to stamp on his opponent.

Bergkamp saw red five minutes after Keown

"The law doesn't differentiate between whether you make contact or not.

"The fact that you attempt to do something like that is punishable by a red card for violent conduct."

    On Carragher:
"Something appeared to be thrown from the crowd that I think hit Jamie. He responded by picking it up and throwing it back into the crowd, and that is a case of violent conduct punishable by a red card.

"Overall, we took the appropriate action during the game and I am satisfied with what we did."

    Liverpool boss Phil Thompson:
"Jamie said he was hit by a coin, and other objects were being thrown, which you cannot accept.

Jamie Carragher was sent off on 72 minutes
    Carragher lost his cool

"But neither can Jamie do what he did; you cannot have that. Two wrongs do not make a right, and I have told him so.

"He let himself down, he let his team-mates down and he let the club down in doing that.

"He was angry and frustrated about getting hit by something, and what he did was out of character, but that still doesn't make it right.

"Arsenal had just had two players sent off, so there was a need for calm heads."

    Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger:
"I'd like to pay to see a game like I saw today if I was a neutral supporter who just likes football.

"Nobody who loves football can say that was a dirty game or that both teams did not try to play football."
