The referee Andy D'Urso required treatment after being hit by an object.

Riot police with dogs were brought in to keep Cardiff fans away from travelling supporters.

And trouble was also reported outside the ground as the crowd dispersed.

Merseyside Police are now in discussions with Tranmere and have planned more meetings later this week as they bid to avoid a repeat of the scenes which marred Sunday's match.

Great atmosphere

After Tranmere's 3-1 third-round victory over Southend on Tuesday, Rovers manager Dave Watson insisted he would put any security fears firmly to the back of his mind.

"My job is to concentrate on a football match and it is a tie I am looking forward to," he said.

"I will leave it to the police and the safety officers to concentrate on everything else.

"It should be a great atmosphere. There will possibly be a full house and it will be a tough game but it's a game that we look forward to."

Cardiff are facing a Football Association and Football Association of Wales inquiry after Sunday's events.
