Second Division Saints defied belief by even reaching the final, prompting United winger Gordon Hill to ask before the final: "Who are Southampton?". By the time Hill was substituted in what was supposed to be the most one-sided of finals, he knew the answer. United, themselves a Second Division side only a season earlier, were full of confidence but found themselves well-matched by Lawrie McMenemy's defiant fighters. Full backs Peter Rodrigues and David Peach snuffed out the considerable threat of Steve Coppell and Hill down either flank. Shocks And Mick Channon almost stunned the crowd with a first-half opener, only to be denied with just goalkeeper Alex Stepney to beat. At the other end, Saints remained secure and, when Sammy McIlroy headed against the woodwork, Tommy Docherty's side must have suspected it was not going to be their day. Seven minutes from time, that fear was realised when Saints completed one of the great Wembley shocks. Former United player McCalliog created the winner, curling a delightful ball into the path of Bobby Stokes, who shrugged off claims for offside by hitting a bouncing volley which eluded Stepney.
