Deschamps has been a Champions League winner with Marseille as a player

Marseille coach Didier Deschamps has said his side will be underdogs at Old Trafford on Tuesday in the second leg of the Champions League last-16 tie.

Manchester United, unbeaten at home this season, drew 0-0 at the Stade Velodrome last month in the first game.

But Deschamps believes his team can advance even though United have never lost to a French side at Old Trafford.

"On paper you would expect United to qualify, but we have a little opportunity," said Deschamps.

Deschamps takes his side to Manchester on the back of five domestic victories in six including a 2-0 win on Friday at Rennes, where Sir Alex Ferguson was an interested spectator.

"If you look at the match purely from a statistical point of view, United have not been defeated at home for a long time," the former Chelsea midfielder added. "They have conceded only one goal in seven Champions League games and are a very strong side, so it is a tough task.

"In addition they are one of four or five teams who have a realistic chance of winning the Champions League."

Ferguson is well aware of the threat posed by Deschamps' side.

"We are playing a very experienced, powerful Marseille team," said Ferguson. "I have watched them twice away from home, against Monaco and against Rennes, and they showed the qualities we will be up against.

"I thought Marseille were going for the 0-0 at home, I must admit. Maybe they are the ones who are confident. They are a good team, who will try to hit us on the counter."
