Fabregas & Wilshere combination pleases Arsene Wenger

Arsenal were technically superior - Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was delighted with the midfield combination of Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere in his side's win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Fabregas returned from injury to score Arsenal's third and Wilshere bounced back from his weekend red card to grab the fourth in a superb 5-1 victory.

"I am convinced it works well," said Wenger of their midfield partnership.

"Cesc just came back but Jack has a good maturity level. Overall they combined very well."

Wilshere is in line to retain his place in the England squad for November's friendly against France at Wembley and Wenger suggested the 18-year-old could be ready for his first international start.

"Without wanting to make headlines, it's difficult to say," explained the Frenchman. "If you ask me the reverse question, do you think he is not ready to play for England? It's hard to say no.

"Jack is a box-to-box player, but can play in any position across the midfield and also behind the striker because he can penetrate.

"We have to give him time and let him play - I know that's not easy for you and [patience is] not your media's greatest strength.

"His maturity is miles ahead of his age and that is a sign of his talent."

Wilshere has produced a series of impressive performances this season but he made headlines for the wrong reasons after being sent off for a lunge on Nikola Zigic in Arsenal's victory over Birmingham on Saturday.

There was also a flashpoint involving Wilshere against Shakhtar when a late challenge floored midfielder Tomas Hubschman, although he only received a stern warning from Norwegian referee Svein Oddvar Moen.

"You want the player to go for the ball. So long as he goes for the ball with intention," stated Wenger. "He's a bit late, that can happen.

If you wanted a Shakhtar Donetsk player to score a goal then it was Eduardo. Everyone has good feelings for him because everyone knows the sort of player he was when he arrived and what he went through

"Sometimes when you get such a storm you want to go the other way but what was important tonight was that he just played football and just went for the game like a real player.

"Jack is a player with a good technical level but also he is a player who doesn't hide from challenges and that is a tremendous strength which you do not want to lose."

Goals from Alex Song, Samir Nasri, Fabregas, Wilshere and Marouane Chamakh put Arsenal 5-0 up before ex-Gunners striker Eduardo scored a consolation for the visitors from Ukraine.

The result maintained Arsenal's 100% start to this season's Champions League and moved them clear at the top of Group H on nine points, three ahead of second-placed Shakhtar.

Braga are third on three points after their 2-0 win over Partizan Belgrade, so Arsenal require only three points from their remaining three games to guarantee a place in the last 16.

"When you win 1-0 people think it's too difficult, when you win 5-1 people think it's too easy," said Wenger. "We had a good team attitude and we had a very good technical level.

"We have won our last two games now and that is important because we go into the Manchester City game (on Sunday) with a good level of confidence and with some certainties in the way we want to behave."

Wenger reserved special praise for Eduardo, whose Arsenal career was disrupted by a horrific leg injury.

The 27-year-old striker was returning to the Emirates Stadium for the first time since his £6m transfer to Shakhtar over the summer.

He received applause from the home support after coming on as a 63rd-minute substitute and then again as he volleyed home in the closing stages.

"If you wanted a Shakhtar Donetsk player to score a goal then it was Eduardo," concluded Wenger. "Everyone has good feelings for him because everyone knows the sort of player he was when he arrived and what he went through."

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu admitted his team's game plan went out the window with some sloppy defending.

"We could not play the offensive game but we organised very well," he said. "However, we gave them mistakes to make it 2-0."
