Laws' side will be playing in the Championship next season

Relegated Burnley's hopes of playing in next season's Europa League are over after England missed out on an extra place through Uefa's Fair Play League.

The Clarets were in contention because of a good disciplinary record but lost out after England failed to achieve a top-three place in those standings.

Teams ranked above them domestically were guaranteed a European spot, apart from Europa League finalists Fulham.

Fulham now must win Wednesday's final against Atletico Madrid to qualify.

England had been in third place in the league table as the season reached its climax but dropped to seventh when the final standings were released with the extra spots going to teams from Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

Despite being relegated from the Premier League, Burnley manager Brian Laws had been keen on combining a Championship campaign with European football.

He said last week: "It would be fantastic for the football club. Our pre-season plans will have to change once we find out, but it almost takes care of your pre-season."

Laws should know on Wednesday if he is to remain as Burnley manager, BBC Sport understands, with a split in the boardroom as to whether he should continue, with some directors believing a change of management is required.

Burnley were relegated from the Premier League, having won just three out of 18 matches since Laws was appointed in January.
