Hughes looking to Man City future

Mark Hughes
Hughes' side were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the quarter-final

Mark Hughes is confident over his future as Manchester City boss after meeting chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak before Thursday's Uefa Cup exit.

City, who have struggled in the league in recent weeks, beat Hamburg 2-1 on the night but lost 4-3 on aggregate.

On his meeting with Al Mubarak, Hughes said: "It was fine, I am still here."

He added: "It was a big night for everyone at the club for obvious reasons, we needed to make a statement and we did that with our performance."

City have struggled in recent weeks, with Sunday's home defeat by Fulham bringing an angry reaction from their fans.

But in front of a crowd of 47,009, the biggest at Eastlands this season, they took the game to Martin Jol's side in a display that gave Hughes plenty of encouragement.

"When in the future we are able to produce that on a regular basis we will be a very difficult side to overcome," Hughes added. "It is the beginning of a long journey."

Al Mubarak has been City's chairman since the oil-rich Abu Dhabi United Group bought the club in September 2008.

City's new owners have invested heavily over the course of the season, with Brazilian forward Robinho their most expensive purchase at a cost of £32.5m.

But the club is destined to end the season without a trophy after losing to Hamburg, while their faltering league form, which has seen them drop to 11th in the Premier League table, means they face a tough battle to qualify for Europe next season.

However, despite missing out on a Uefa Cup semi-final place, Hughes said he was proud of his side's performance.

Hamburg took an early lead through Paolo Guerrero but City came back with goals from Elano and Felipe Caicedo.

Elano also hit the woodwork twice, while Caicedo missed from close range, but Hamburg held on despite intense City pressure.

"It was a really poor start but we did not let that affect us. We picked ourselves up and got back on level terms very quickly," said Hughes.

"There was a real sense that we were trying to make something special happen and we almost achieved that goal. But unfortunately we did not get that break when we needed it.

"We took the game to Hamburg and it was a great effort by everyone. No-one gave us any chance of turning the tie around. We came very close.

"It was important we came out and showed people there are things happening here and we have ability."

Hamburg will now meet fellow German side Werder Bremen in the last four. Hamburg coach and former Tottenham boss Martin Jol was delighted his team could see off the challenge of Manchester City.

"It's unbelievable, to get to the semi-finals is fantastic," said Jol.

"I think we were the better team at home, and the first half (Thursday) we were probably the better team. The penalty was also harsh but the crowd was fantastic and they've got some good players."
