Luis Aguiar celebrates his free-kick as Harry Redknapp looks perplexed
Portsmouth were beaten 3-0 in Portugal as they lost their opening Uefa Cup Group E match against Braga.
Pompey went behind to a stunning free-kick with Luis Aguiar beating David James from 30 yards out.
Just 90 seconds into the second half, Braga increased their lead with Wason Renteria beating the offside trap before firing low past James.
And with only a few minutes remaining, Osorio Alan found the net from inside the six-yard box for the third.
Portsmouth face AC Milan next and they will have to perform better if they are to kick-start their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages.
They started poorly, conceding after eight minutes, with James having no chance with Aguiar's swerving, fiercely-struck set-piece.
Portsmouth also lost Glen Little midway through the first half through injury with their best chance of the opening 45 minutes falling to Jermain Defoe, but the England man blasted his shot against the body of goalkeeper Eduardo.
Just after the re-start Braga made it 2-0 with Renteria timing his run well to finish coolly following good link-up play from Albert Meyong and Aguiar.
Crouch had the ball in the net on the hour, but his deflected header was ruled out for offside.
Braga finished strongly and Aguiar fired into the side-netting late on.
But the hosts were not to be denied a third, with Alan slotting home from close range with three minutes of normal time remaining.
There was further bad news for Pompey as they also lost Armand Traore through injury.
Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp: "It wasn't like the first game in Portugal. The referee there, a Turk, was very good but this guy didn't give us anything.
"We also had a perfectly good goal disallowed. I've seen it again and the goalkeeper was not touched. At 2-1 it could have made all the difference.
"Braga played well and won the game but I thought it was poor the way they went about it. It doesn't happen in our game in England and I hope it never will."
Portsmouth keeper David James: "I wasn't happy with their sportsmanship.
"I haven't shaken any hands with them after the game and sometimes you get that in European games.
"They were playing for free-kicks and we are not that type of side. We knew they would go down easily, but there's not much we can do about that.
"The annoying thing is, they only had four shots on target and have scored three goals. We'll learn from the experience though."
