Juan Emanuel Culio (centre) celebrates his stunning double in Rome
Romanian side CFR Cluj-Napoca pulled off one of the biggest Champions League shocks in recent memory with a 2-1 victory away at Roma on the opening day of the 2008-09 season.
Cluj, who were playing third tier Romanian football seven years ago, fell behind when Christian Panucci headed in a cross from Daniele De Rossi after 17 minutes.
But Cluj, playing their first Champions League game, had not read the script and Argentine midfielder Juan Emanuel Culio strode through to fire in from the edge of the penalty area.
Culio struck an astonishing second-half winner with a vicious second-half volley and they hung on with relative ease, Sixto Peralta nearly making it 3-1 when his header hit the bar.
In the group's other game, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka bagged as Chelsea ran riot, thumping French side Bordeaux 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.
GROUP B
Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho got off to the perfect start as his side won comfortably 2-0 away at Greek outfit Panathinaikos.
Mourinho, a Champions League winner with Porto in 2004, saw his side go in front when Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw off three defenders and teed up Amantino Mancini to fire home.
Bryce Moon struck the bar for the hosts, but Brazilian hitman Adriano wrapped up the points for Inter with a smart late finish after more good work from Ibrahimovic.
In the group's other game, Champions League debutants Anorthosis Famagusta secured a surprise point away at German side Werder Bremen in a 0-0 draw, Claudio Pizarro missing two early chances for the hosts.
GROUP C
The 2006 champions Barcelona got their campaign off to a winning start as they saw off Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon 3-1 at the Nou Camp.
Rafael Marquez headed them in front, Samuel Eto'o doubled the lead after he had been pushed in the penalty area and although Antonio Tonel turned in a free-kick, Xavi poked in Andres Iniesta's cross to wrap it up.
Shakhtar Donetsk joined the Catalans at the top of the group on three points with a 2-1 victory in Switzerland against Basel.
Luis Fernandinho struck a sizzling 40-yard free-kick and Rodrigues Jadson's set-piece from the left flew in to put them 2-0 up, before David Abraham grabbed a late close-range consolation for the hosts.
GROUP D
Spanish side Atletico Madrid celebrated being back in the Champions League with a comprehensive 3-0 victory away at Dutch team PSV Eindhoven.
Argentine wonderkid Sergio Aguero did most of the damage, slotting in to capitalise on a defensive mistake early on, before his strike partner Diego Forlan limped off through injury.
Aguero doubled the lead before half-time with a sizzling finish after being set up by Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Portuguese midfielder Maniche rattled in the third from Luis Garcia's pass.
In the group's other game, Lorik Cana put Marseille ahead at home to Liverpool, before Steven Gerrard struck a beauty to level and then bagged the winner from the penalty spot to earn a 2-1 triumph.
