Grant places winning above style

Chelsea manager Avram Grant

Chelsea boss Avram Grant said it did not matter that they struggled against Fenerbahce in the Champions League because they reached the semi-finals.

The Blues laboured to a 2-0 win at home to win 3-2 on aggregate and Grant said: "When you play in the quarter-finals, all that matters is reaching the semis.

"We needed to win and we did. In Turkey we played better than we did today, but the result was the important thing.

"We started the game well but we didn't carry it on and it got a bit nervous."

Michael Ballack's fourth-minute goal and Frank Lampard's late second set up a Champions League semi-final against Liverpool for the third time in four seasons.

Grant added: "This is the first news they told me, that it was Liverpool in the semi-finals.

"The one thing I always want to know is the future. I don't know the future but we will do our best to be in the final.

"I feel good because our target was to be in the semi-final of the Champions League and we did it.

"I said that we could do good things this year. Now we are close. So of course I am optimistic and I believe."

Michael Essien will miss the first leg against Liverpool - at Anfield - after picking up a needless booking late on for throwing the ball away.

"It's a bit disappointing but it has happened. It's not good that he will miss the next game but it is a fact and we cannot do anything about it," said Grant.

The Israeli also confirmed that goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini suffered a hamstring injury that forced him off in the first half, though he does not know how long the Italian will be out for.

"The news is that it doesn't look so good for the moment with Carlo but we need to wait and see. It is his hamstring," said Grant.

"This year I am more a doctor than a manager, I need to answer every week about injuries."

Chelsea are already without first-choice keeper Petr Cech, who suffered a facial injury in a training-ground clash on Sunday.
