Player of the Day: Liverpool hat-trick hero Yossi Benayoun wins your vote with a mark of 8.62 ahead of Celtic's match-winner Aiden McGeady.

"We've just lost twice to Rosenborg. I don't quite think anyone can top that. Valencia have completely fallen apart. It had been coming for a while but the crash has been spectacular."

"They keep playing the video of that red-card challenge at Parkhead on Scott Brown. Hard one to watch that. Can't believe his leg never broke."

"Congratulations Liverpool. I feel better about you holding the Champions League record than Arsenal. That Babel-heel move was pure brilliance. But Besiktas was awful."

AS THE GROUPS STANDGroup A: Porto leapfrog Marseille into top spot and Liverpool jump above Besiktas into third. The Reds are now five points adrift of Porto and four off Marseille with games to come against them both. They must keep on winning to have any hope of going through.
Group B: Chelsea stay on top but Rosenborg's excellent win at Valencia means they close to within a point of the Blues. These two meet in Norway in three weeks.
Group C: Real Madrid maintain their three-point advantage over the rest, but Lazio and Olympiakos are now locked together in second.
Group D: AC Milan stay in pole position and Shakhtar Donetsk have the edge on Celtic in second because of their victory over the Bhoys in the Uklraine. The return match in Glasgow is next on the fixture list.
2137: RED CARD Werder Bremen
Still time for another late sending off, and they don't get much later than this. Any hope of a Bremen bounce back have gone with playmaker Diego receiving a second yellow for a petulant kick at the ball on the touchline when it was out of play.
2136: FULL-TIME Celtic 1-0 Benfica
Benfica keeper Quim launches a long clearance forward, but the whistle goes before it drops. That is 11 wins in 15 home games in the Champions League and the Bhoys draw level with Shakhtar Donetsk, who are coming to Glasgow in three weeks.
2135: Almost time at Celtic Park. One last push forward from 10-man Benfica.
2135: GOAL Shakhtar Donetsk 0-3 AC Milan
Filippo Inzaghi gets his second of the night and what must surely be our last. Kaka tees the Italian up for his 62nd goal in Uefa club competition to draw level with German legend Gerd Muller.
2134: FULL TIME Liverpool 8-0 Besiktas
"Who needs Torres? Hat-trick from Benayoun, Two from Crouch, Two from Babel and one from Gerrard. It's all about the midfield and the gangly genius."
Youcannotbeserious on 606
2133: FULL TIME Schalke 04 0-0 Chelsea
A point means the Blues will have to wait before booking a place in the knockout stages.
2132: Aiden McGeady sees a thumping shot saved by Quim. Celtic are ending the night on the front foot and against 10 men it looks like the points will be going their way.
2130: GOAL Liverpool 8-0 Besiktas
Scrap those 'Magnificent Seven' headlines. Peter Crouch gets his second of the night with a glancing header from Yossi Benayoun's right-wing cross. That's a record score for the Champions League.
2130: GOAL Lazio 2-1 Werder Bremen
A consolation for the Germans from the spot. Diego scores with a thumping effort into the roof of the net.
2129: RED CARD Lazio
Cribari gets his second booking for a foul on Per Mertesacker in the box. Two yellows equal one red and he'll be getting first dibs on the hot water in the showers.
2128: Peter Lovenkrands thumps a low drive against the inside of the Chelsea post.
2127: Scott Brown got back to his feet and tried to carry on playing but eventually throws in the towel. He needs to come off.
2126: RED CARD Benfica
A simply disgusting challenge from Augustin Binya on Scott Brown and the Benfica man is rightly given his marching orders. His studs jarred into the Celtic man's leg. No harm done, luckily, but that is the sort of 'tackle' that breaks legs.
2125: Liverpool's Ryan Babel almost bags a quick-fire hat-trick but his header from Harry Kewell's cross cannons back off the bar.
2121: GOAL Liverpool 7-0 Besiktas
What the... . Ryan Babel puts on the afterburners to race on to a ball over the top and his block on Edouard Cisse's hooked clearance loops in. When it's your day it's your day.
2119: GOAL Liverpool 6-0 Besiktas
Sweet, sweet football. Lucas finds Yossi Benayoun on the right and substitute Ryan Babel flicks his low cross beyond Hakan Arikan with a backheel.
2118: GOAL FC Porto 2-1 Marseille
Not what Liverpool wanted, although it will take a lot to quell the euphoria at Anfield tonight. Lisandro Lopez scores a goal that could send Porto top of Group A.
2114: GOAL Shakhtar Donetsk 0-2 AC Milan
Kaka cleans up for AC Milan who will open up a three-point lead over their Ukrainian hosts at the top of Group D - Celtic's group.
2112: Schalke hit the Chelsea woodwork. Rafinha loops a shot from the right on to the crossbar and Peter Lovenkrands sees his subsequent goalbound header cleared by Michael Essien.
2111: GOAL Lazio 2-0 Werder Bremen
The goals are beginning to tot up now and Tommaso Rocchi gets his second of the night.
2110: GOAL Liverpool 5-0 Besiktas
Steven Gerrard bursts from midfield, lays a forward pass off to Andriy Voronin, runs on to the return and unleashes a thunderous shot beyond Hakan Arikan. If the visiting keeper had got his hands to that one they would have snapped off at the wrist.
"Liverpool a delight. Besiktas will be lucky to hit the casbah especially now Ryan keBabel is on. Kurd it be 6?"
Marc, in Liverpool, via text on 81111
2109: GOAL Shakhtar Donetsk 0-1 AC Milan
That's what Gordon Strachan said he wanted, a Milan win. Filippo Inzaghi scores with a crisp finish after a searching through-ball from Andrea Pirlo.
2107: Horrible weather in Glasgow and here come those changes. Chris Killen and Massimo Donati on. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Jiri Jarosik off.
2105: Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is also lining up some changes.
2104: Time to shuffle the pack for Chelsea as Juliano Belletti is replaced by Mikel John Obi. That will mean Michael Essien drops back to right-back.
2101: GOAL Valencia 0-2 Rosenborg
Not a great Champions League debut for new Valencia boss Ronald Koeman. Steffen Iversen is on target again and the Spaniards could be the big-name casualty in the group stages. The former Tottenham man's second goal means Chelsea just need one of their own to go through.
2100: GOAL Lazio 1-0 Werder Bremen
A first goal of the night in Group C and it goes to Tommaso Rocchi from the penalty spot. That could be enough to see them rocket up the table - although it was hardly a rocket of a shot. Tim Wiese saved the initial effort with his legs but Rocchi followed up to tap in as Wiese scrambled to save.
2059: Carlo Cudicini is called into action for the first time. Chelsea's replacement keeper pushes away Ivan Rakitic's shot at the post. Schalke are playing the better without a shadow of a doubt.
2058: Holy smoke. Liverpool have scored as many goals as the rest of the teams put together tonight.
2057: GOAL Liverpool 4-0 Besiktas
Hakan Arikan needs to learn how to catch the ball. The Besiktas keeper parries another shot, this time from Steven Gerrard's free-kick, and Yossi Benayoun is in the same place as he was before on the right of the goal to slot. That's his hat-trick.
2055: Celtic's Scott McDonald is hassling and harrying the Benfica defence like a whippet sniffing out a rabbit... or a striker bang in form sniffing out a goal.
2053: GOAL Liverpool 3-0 Besiktas
And better. Andriy Voronin picks out John Arne Riise in the box, and while the Norwegian's rasping shot is saved, Yossi Benayoun is in the right place at the right time to slot in the rebound.
2050: GOAL FC Porto 1-1 Marseille
Things are getting better and better for Liverpool with Mamadou Niang finding a leveller for Marseille in Portugal. That will squeeze things up a bit in Group A.
2048: What is wrong with Chelsea tonight at the back? Maybe they're being overly exposed by Avram Grant's more attack-minded approach. Juliano Belletti looks baffled and befuddled by some of the things going on out there.
2046: The action resumes, although not for Petr Cech. Carlo Cudicini's half-time workout has been worth the effort and he is in between the sticks for Chelsea's injured first-choice stopper.
Player rater: Not much between Celtic's Scott McDonald and Chelsea's Petr Cech, but you give the Bhoys striker the edge with a mark of 8.17. And will Cech be out for the second 45? Carlo Cudicini is being put through his paces at the Arena AufSchalke.
"Besiktas are playing that bad they are actually making Liverpool look like they are playing really well when they are playing about average."
Scubar2k8 on 606
"Liverpool are playing that well they're causing Besiktas to play badly."
Dave, in Bristol, via text on 81111
"Come on Besiktas. Summon the spirit of Istanbul!"
baylis21 on 606
2031: HALF-TIME
Just five goals but never a dull moment. Things are looking up for Liverpool and Celtic. Happy days. Not the best from Chelsea but encouraging signs before the break.
2030: GOAL Celtic 1-0 Benfica
A goal right on the break and Celtic Park is rocking. Aiden McGeady steps in from the left and his right-footed shot from outside the area is deflected beyond the wrong-footed Quim. It doesn't matter how they go in as long as they do.
2026: Excellent work from Joe Cole in the middle of the park tees up Didier Drogba but his shot hits the chest of the Schalke keeper who stays big as they say in training videos. Chelsea's best move of the match.
"My mate Kris has gone to a different pub to watch Liverpool thus changing their luck. Seems to be working."
Gordon via text on 81111
2020: Nervy times at Celtic Park as Rui Costa takes an age to line up a free-kick. It was so not worth the wait. It's as if he clubbed it with an ugly stick high, wide and completely and utterly not handsome.
2017: GOAL Liverpool 2-0 Besiktas
Yossi Bennayoun controls an Andriy Voronin cross with his first touch and powers in a shot in a smart finish from 15 yards. Lovely from Liverpool.
2017: GOAL Valencia 0-1 Rosenborg
That is good news for Chelsea. A win for Rosenborg coupled with a Blues victory and the Premier League side will be booking a place in the knockout stages tonight. Steffen Iversen slots.
2016: Petr Cech's started playing charades with the Chelsea bench now. One word... sounds like... hills. Pills. That's what he wants. Painkillers taken and stretching of his left leg continues.
2015: GOAL Porto 1-0 Marseille
Liverpool are winning which is good for them. Porto are now winning which is bad for them... but obviously very good for the Portuguese. Tarik Sektioui scores. An anonymous texter comes in with the description... "a great goal, past 5 players, the keeper and put it in the net. Cracking."
2013: You know how Greg Rusedski always seemed to hobble and moan about an injury after dropping a point or losing a match, well maybe Petr Cech is doing some of that now. He's hobbling, although it looks more serious than anything Britain's favourite Canadian ever mustered and he could be coming off.
2012: Petr Cech drops a corner and that man Heiko Westermann is on hand to stab an effort on goal. Juliano Belletti has the better of his nemesis this time and clears off the line.
2009: Schalke's Heiko Westermann may be carving out a new career for himself as a wide midfielder. He's normally found at centre-back but has been pressed into action on the left and is loving it. Juliano Belletti isn't.
2008: Celtic are warming to their task and Scott McDonald sees a shot saved. The Australian has been in billabong form and waltzing around defences like Matilda in recent weeks. He has scored Celtic's last six goals.
2006: So close to a second for Liverpool. Bobo heads off the line to deny John Arne Riise.
2004: Heiko Westermann glides past Juliano Belletti all too easily but sees his shot turned behind. Soren Larrson hits the side-netting from the corner. Schalke like that side-netting.
2003: GOAL Liverpool 1-0 Besiktas
There's a goal to test the system and the bottle of Besiktas. A white-shirted visiting defender slides in to block an Andriy Voronin through-ball and inadvertently plays it straight to Peter Crouch. His first shot is saved, but he slots the follow-up.
2002: Hey, stop the flood of criticism about the text commentaries and the scores not updating. A) There are no goals yet. B) The system is up the spout tonight and nothing seems to be updating.
2001: Scott Brown gets a shot away on the Benfica goal but Quim is down well to his left to punch away the low effort.
1958: Alvaro Arbeloa is having a good time of it on the Liverpool right and this time manages to get a cross in. Yossi Benayoun meets the ball but guides his shot against the outside of the near post.
1957: All action but no goals. Each week of the group stage the number of goals has gone up and last time out it was 24 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mmmmm. Doesn't look likely we'll be hitting the quarter-century to keep that escalating figure going through the roof.
1955: Oh no. Another bad connection with the bonce in the box. John Kennedy doffs the dunce's hat after failing to get enough on Paul Hartley's free-kick while in space at the back post. Gordon Strachan has gone all ginger nut on the touchline.
1953: Another great chance for Liverpool. Peter Crouch heads wide from John Arne Riise's cross.
1952: Rip-roaring starts everywhere, but this is not so encouraging from a British perspective. Benfica slice open the Celtic defence with the arrogance of Zorro. Fortunately Artur Boruc is on hand to palm away a fierce Oscar Cardozo shot. The keeper's bawling reaction at his defence is even fiercer than the shot!
1951: It was around this sort of the last fixture that Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer blundered big time. This time he denies Didier Drogba with a fine save.
1950: Schalke might be down to a skeleton squad but they have given Chelsea an early scare. Alex tripped Gerald Asamoah but Ivan Rakitic fires the free-kick over.
1948: Now a chance for Liverpool. Peter Crouch knocks the ball into the path of Andriy Voronin who shoots wide. He really should hit the target from there. He was in the same postcode as the penalty spot.
"Why is Voronin playing? He is like Donald Duck with a ponytail."
Alex via text on 81111
1947: Besiktas nearly catch Liverpool on the break. Matias Delagado picks out Mehmet Sedef who shoots into the side netting.
1945: Here we go.
"I am here in a freezing night at Anfield waiting for the game to start. As a Man City fan, I am not supporting anyone, but it promises to be a cracker! Liverpool are fighting for their Champions League lives. Can't wait!"
ManBlue4Eva on 606
1941: 'You'll Never Walk Alone' rings around Anfield and Celtic Park before the players emerge there, there and everywhere.
1940: Mega, massive, mundane... it's nothing without you so get involved on 606 or drop us a text from any of the games on 81111.
1938: A big game in Germany and Celtic striker Scott McDonald has described the meeting in Glasgow as "massive", but the mega match is undoubtedly at Anfield and that is where BBC Radio 5 Live are with Alan Green, Mike Ingham and Graham Taylor running the rule over the action.
1936: With Chelsea on a run of seven successive wins, including two Champions League victories, you suspect Schalke won't be turning things around despite the coach's upbeat bluster.
1935: Hats off to Schalke coach Mirko Slomka. He's not hiding behind the bumps and bruises. "We fought the whole season for the privilege of savouring games like this and we've still got a chance with two Champions League home games to turn things around," he has said.
1933: And to add injury to insult, Schalke have so many injuries they have only been able to name five substitutes!
1932: If you think Besiktas are in bad shape, check out Schalke 04. They went down to a surprise weekend defeat at Cottbus, the bottom side in the Bundesliga, and have won just once in their last six matches in all competitions.
1929: The good news for Liverpool is Besiktas are in a worse run of form. Since that 2-1 victory in the last round of Champions League matches they have played three, drawn one and lost two, including a defeat to Fenerbahce at the weekend when they surrendered an early lead.
1925: But Liverpool's form is patchy, particularly at home where they have won just one of their last six matches. That was against Cardiff in the Carling Cup - their only win in three games since losing in Istanbul to Besiktas.
1923: Besiktas won on their last trip to England when they beat Chelsea in the 2003/04 group stages - one of their six victories in 21 outings in Europe's premier competition. On the flip side, Liverpool have never lost at home to a Turkish side.
1921: A Liverpool victory at home to Besiktas definitely is a must for Rafael Benitez. Lose and last season's runners-up have no chance of making the knockout stage of the Champions League.
1919: Marseille are another team with wildly differing fortunes domestically and in Europe. Second bottom in France with only one league win in their last eight, but top of Group A and Liverpool fans will want them to end the night still in pole position. A Porto win against the French side is not on Rafael Benitez's wish list.
1917: Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has described his "perfect" scenario as a Bhoys win and an AC Milan victory at Shakhtar Donetsk. Amazing. Milan are off the rhythm in Serie A this season but still don't miss a beat in this competition.
"Is it just me who's a bit nervous about Celtic. I know they have an amazing home record but in the past it was never a case of they had to win the next game. To go through they have to win the next two games. Anyone think the pressure might get to them?"
Yak-Attack on 606
1912: The good news for Celtic is that they are blinding at home in Europe with 10 wins from 14 games so that sequence of five home wins between these two should stretch to six.
1907: A fortnight ago Benfica won with a late goal from Oscar Cardozo, while in October last year Celtic came out on top with a 3-0 victory. That night's goalscorers were Kenny Miller and Stephen Pearson, who have both since headed south to join Derby.
1904: These teams have become frequent foes in the last year and this is the fourth time they have faced off against each other. Each time the home team has won.
1901: Benfica also won 2-1 at the weekend and are second in Portugal's SuperLiga. They're in good nick having won their last four matches, each by a single-goal margin.
1858: TEAM NEWS Celtic v Benfica
No Shunsuke Nakamura for the Hoops. He is out with a knee injury so Gordon Strachan sends out the same team that beat Kilmarnock 2-1 at the weekend.
1855: TEAM NEWS Liverpool v Besiktas
Reds striker Peter Crouch makes a rare start as he comes in for Dirk Kuyt and partners Andriy Voronin up top. The left-side Fabio Aurelio also starts, while Alvaro Arbeloa takes Steve Finnan's place at right-back.
1853: TEAM NEWS Schalke 04 v Chelsea
The German club's treatment room looks like something out of 'Casualty' they've so many players nursing knocks, but what of the Blues? They make two changes from the side which spelt the end of Chris Hutchings' Wigan reign, Joe Cole returning to the starting line-up at the expense of Shaun Wright-Phillips and Claude Makelele coming in for Mikel Jon Obi.
1851: Celtic and Chelsea are Britain's other representatives in action. The Bhoys are bottom of Group D and need to maintain their good home form against Benfica and Chelsea are sitting pretty in Group B ahead of their game against injury-hit Schalke 04 in Germany.
1850: This is where it gets tasty - particularly for Liverpool Will it be sweet or sour for the Reds who need to bag the points at home to Besiktas.
1847: There are Christmas decorations already up in the street and festive offers down at the bakery. Calm down fellas. It's not even December yet. It's the first week of November which means the start of the second half of the Champions League group stages and we can't wait.
