Newcastle were dumped out of the Uefa Cup as they were outclassed and outplayed by AZ Alkmaar.

The Magpies held a 4-2 first-leg lead but quickly saw their advantage reduced when Shota Arveladze slotted in.

Kieron Dyer slid a shot across goal for Newcastle and paid the price for the miss when Danny Koevermans headed in a corner to put the Dutch side 2-0 up.

Obafemi Martins missed a one-on-one and Scott Parker had a goal disallowed as Newcastle went out on away goals.

AZ Alkmaar had started slowly and gradually increased the pressure on the Magpies goal before taking the lead.

Newcastle keeper Shay Given had just pulled off a fingertip save to deny Julian Jenner with the visitors struggling for possession.

But Given could do little when Arveladze slid in and sidefooted in from a low Danny Koevermans ball across the six yard line.

Parker went closest for Newcastle in the first half

Almost immediately, Parker shot just high from the edge of the area in a let-off for AZ while Steven Taylor escaped a red card for what seemed an intentional elbow on Koevermans.

AZ are the leading scorers in the Dutch Eredivisie and again attempted to crank up the pressure on a Newcastle side who were enhancing their dubious reputation for poor defending.

Newcastle were again breathing a sigh of relief after Paul Huntingdon was not adjudged to have conceded a penalty.

He appeared to foul Jenner as the midfielder threatened to go through clean through and a disbelieving AZ were still shaking their heads at the decision heading into half-time.

Newcastle's defending continued to look shaky after the interval but Dyer could have dealt a AZ a huge blow.

He raced on to a chipped free-kick and rounded keeper Boy Watermans only to find the acute angle too testing as his shot rolled across goal and out of play.

AZ responded with Koevermans planting a near-post header home from a corner with the Dutch side drawing level on aggregate and leading on the away goals rule.

AZ had two chances cleared off the Newcastle goal-line by Taylor and Huntingdon as the visitors almost caved in.

But, despite their poor performance, Martins found himself one-on-one with the AZ keeper late on only to have his shot smothered.

A goal would have put Newcastle through and Parker thought he had got a winner after sliding in a shot, but his effort was disallowed for a foul in the build-up.
