Beckham insists he will not leave Real during this season

The former England skipper's current deal expires next summer and Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic said: "We want to renew his contract.

"On our part there is no problem but he wants to wait a little longer to see if he gets back in the team."

Beckham, 31, insists that he will not be seeking a move away from Real during the January transfer window.

Beckham has struggled to impress new Real boss Fabio Capello, starting just three of Real's nine league games this season.

He signed a four-year contract when he joined Real from Manchester United in 2003 and had been a fixture in the team for the three seasons before Capello's appointment.

Beckham's arrival at the Bernabeu coincided with a downturn in Real's fortunes and the Spanish giants have not won a major trophy since.

Mijatovic said: "He has been unlucky in that he hasn't won any trophies in the last three years and he's a little sad as he is not taking part as much as he would like.

"The situation could change but we can't guarantee anyone a place in our first team.

"I believe that he will stay in the end because the atmosphere in the team is very good and will allow him to experience something good here."
