AC Milan have abandoned their interest in Real Madrid striker Ronaldo. Real had not wanted to sell the 30-year-old Brazilian but had indicated they may be interested in a player swap, with Kaka a potential target.
But a statement on the Italian club's website on Friday said they had "definitively broken off" talks.
Ronaldo, who is currently recovering from a knee operation after the World Cup, joined Madrid from Milan's city rivals Inter four years ago.
Ronaldo has indicated he would be happy to end his career at Madrid, and Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic said that was good news as far as they were concerned.
"The player is very happy at Real Madrid," he said.
"I would like him to stay. He is happy and for us to let him leave it would have to be a very important offer."
On Tuesday this week, Real completed the signing of Mali international midfielder Mahamadou Diarra, 25, from Lyon.
His move, for an undisclosed fee believed to be around �17m, had been delayed by arguments between Real and Lyon over who would pay compensation to his former clubs Bamako, OFI Crete and Vitesse Arnhem for their role in his development.
Diarra becomes Real's fourth signing of the summer after the arrivals of Fabio Cannavaro, Emerson and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
