France football legend Michel Platini has confirmed that he will challenge for the presidency of Uefa, European football's governing body. French football association chief Jean-Pierre Escalettes confirmed Platini's candidacy in a letter to Uefa secretary general Lars-Christer Olsson.
Platini, 51, will challenge incumbent Lennart Johansson, the 76-year-old Swede who has headed Uefa since 1990.
The elections for the Uefa presidency will be held in January 2007.
Platini is a member of the Uefa and Fifa executive committees.
