Real Madrid's turbulent season continued as Fernando Martin resigned as club president after losing a vote of confidence at a board meeting. Director Luis Gomez-Montejano, 83, will take over as the club's president until elections can be held.
It was Martin's first full board meeting since succeeding Florentino Perez, who stepped down in February.
Real will end the campaign without a trophy for the third successive season, their worst run in more than 50 years.
Despite his resignation, Martin will run for the presidency again in the next election.
Spokesman for the board Enrique Sanchez said: "The board have agreed unanimously to call for a presidential election.
"They have accepted Martin's resignation so that he can stand in those elections.
Juan Roman Lopez Caro has been in temporary charge of the Madrid team since December 2005 following the sacking of Wanderley Luxemburgo.
Early into his presidency, Martin promised to appoint a new coach by the end of March and named a seven-man target list.
No announcement has been made but Spanish media have put AC Milan's Carlo Ancelotti at the top of that list, with departing England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson as a possible back-up option.
