Sainz could be heading for a driving seat at footballing giants Real |
Former world rally champion Carlos Sainz has joined forces with Juan Miguel Villar Mir to take part in Real Madrid's club president election. The pair made the announcement in sports daily AS on Saturday.
Construction magnate Villar Mir would take up the president's post if the bid was successful while Sainz would become vice-president.
The election on 2 July was called after Fernando Martin was ousted as president in April after just two months.
"We would like to confirm that after a number of meetings in the last few days, we have decided to unite our two candidatures," Villar Mir and Sainz said in a joint statement.
Other possible candidates include former president Lorenzo Sanz, leading Spanish businessman Juan Palacios, dissident director Ramon Calderon and lawyer and economist Arturo Baldasano who lost heavily to former president Florentino Perez in the 2004 election.
