Glasgow City Council's leader says the awarding the 2007 Uefa Cup final to Hampden Park is further recognition of the city's ability to hold top events. Charlie Gordon said Uefa's decision was "great news for the city".
"When we hosted the Uefa Champions League final in 2002, we set the standard for world-class sporting events," he said.
"Indeed, Uefa could not have been more vociferous in their praise for Glasgow and the council for its great success."
Glasgow will this summer play host to the one of the UK's biggest sporting events, the Special Olympics Great Britain Games.
It is the kind of event that has been attracted on the back of the Champions League final's success.
"Facilities for players, fans, visitors and the world's media were second-to-none," said Gordon.
"I have no doubt that we will repeat that success and confirm Glasgow as a global gateway for world-class sporting, cultural and conference events."
Lord Provost Liz Cameron added: "This is not only a recognition of our football traditions but a clear message to the world that Glasgow is an excellent venue for first-class sporting events.
"It's an additional tribute to our football supporters, who have won awards for their friendliness and good behaviour.
"I am sure all of our citizens will welcome those who travel to Glasgow for the event and here's hoping one of our own teams makes it to the final."
