Barcelona trounced Real Madrid to move seven points clear of their great rivals in La Liga, but the game was marred by racist chanting. Samuel Eto'o, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ronaldinho scored for Barca.
England captain David Beckham started the match but endured a miserable evening and was replaced by Michael Owen in the 54th minute.
Real's Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos was the main target of racist chants from the home fans.
After the match, Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard said: "We've got to keep working hard and not get carried away just because we've won this match.
"The result shows us the way forward but we mustn't start thinking we are unbeatable."
Real boss Garcia Remon said hopes of winning the title were still alive despite the points deficit to Barcelona in the league.
He added: "It was an infantile error that led to their first goal and it came at the worst time for us. After that we just couldn't cope with the pressure."
