Jonathan Woodgate does not need an operation on his torn thigh muscle but is expected to be out for 10 weeks. There were fears the Real Madrid defender may need surgery which would rule him out for the season after a recurrence of his injury in training.
But a visit to a specialist clinic in America has eased those concerns.
"These 10 weeks are the time we estimate will be necessary to guarantee proper healing," said Real doctor Alfonso Del Corral.
Woodgate was hoping to make his debut for Real in a friendly on Tuesday as he closed in on a comeback before suffering the latest setback in his recovery.
He has been out since playing for Newcastle against Chelsea in April 2004 and the injury ruled Woodgate out of England's squad for Euro 2004.
Real paid 13.4m for his services despite his lengthy injury problems.
