Keegan hails improved squad
City striker Nicolas Anelka

Man City boss Kevin Keegan is refusing to get carried away after seeing his side romp to victory in their first competitive game at the City of Manchester Stadium.

City began life at their new home with a 5-0 hammering of Welsh side TNS in the first leg of their Uefa Cup qualifying round tie.

Trevor Sinclair set City on their way to a comfortable win with a goal after 14 minutes before the Blues added four more after the interval.

Last season Keegan boldly announced his team would mark their return to the Premiership with a top-six finish.

They fell short of the manager's target but still qualified for the Uefa Cup through their position in the Fair Play League.

But Keegan is refusing to make such bold predictions again, even though he believes his squad is better than it was 12 months ago.

We've conceded some daft goals but that's why my players are at the level that they are
TNS boss Ken McKenna

"I stuck my neck out last year but I maintain we should have finished in the top six," he said.

"If you look back, we lost eight times at home. If we had won just two of those and drawn a couple more, we would have been there.

"I am not setting targets this year but if we can stay clear of injuries we will do very well."

TNS coach Ken McKenna blamed individual errors for the City goals, including a couple of blunders from goalkeeper and lifelong City fan Gerry Doherty.

"We've conceded some daft goals but that's why my players are at the level that they are," said McKenna.

"Last year we were 5-0 down after the first-leg to the Polish side Amica Wronki.

"We threw everything at them in the second match, got to 2-2 at half-time, then eventually lost 7-2 and then got slated by the Welsh FA.

"I think we need to take that into account when we look at the second leg in a fortnight's time."
