Brazil full-back Cafu has signed a two-year deal with European champions AC Milan after leaving Roma as a free agent. Cafu, captain of Brazil's World Cup-winning side last year, will be at Milan until June 2005.
The 33-year-old had signed a preliminary agreement to join Yokohama Marinos in the J-League earlier in the year.
But the player indicated he did not want to move to the Far East, citing health concerns over the Sars virus - even though Japan has reported no confirmed cases of the disease.
He has won two World Cup winners' medals in a glittering career in which he has amassed 114 international caps.
And against Germany in 2002, he became the first footballer to play in three World Cup finals following his appearances against Italy in 1994 and France in 1998.
Cafu - full name Marcos Evangelista de Moraes - started playing in the Brazilian league for Sao Paulo before moving to Palmeiras.
He joined Roma in 1997 and was an integral part of the side that won the Serie A title in 2001.
Cafu will add even greater depth to Milan's defence, lining up alongside the likes of Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta.
