Switzerland goalkeeper Jorg Stiel says England must improve if they are to go on and win Euro 2004. Stiel hailed England scorer Wayne Rooney, but told BBC Sport: "The 3-0 scoreline was not fair on us. They were not as good as that suggests.
"England will have to take their performances on to a higher level if they want to win the tournament. They are good, but must improve.
"Rooney is a very good player who will get better. He has great potential."
Stiel was unhappy, however, with a first-half challenge by Rooney that earned the Everton striker a booking.
He said: "He came straight in with his foot in the direction of my face and that is not really fair, but it's okay - not a problem for me.
"Rooney is a young guy who is passionate about his football. Maybe he needs to calm down a bit, but he is young and maybe it's understandable.
"It didn't have any problems with that, but it seems the England fans had a problem with it because they were shouting against me for the rest of the game."
