Celta Vigo veteran Alexander Mostovoi provides Russia's creative spark and goalscoring threat from midfield. He was an international regular for a decade before he was dropped as they struggled to qualify for Euro 2004.
But the classy midfielder was recalled to the squad and helped ignite their stuttering displays in Group 10.
Mostovoi's career took him from Spartak Moscow to Benfica in 1992 and, despite winning the title in his first season in Portugal, he failed to shine.
France was his next destination and he began to fulfil his potential at Caen and Strasbourg before transferring to Celta in 1996.
An instant hit, Mostovoi linked up with international colleague Valeri Karpin as the Spanish club qualified for the Champions League for the first time.
Did you know? Celta Vigo's fans raised money to erect a monument in his honour.
