Aleksandrs Starkovs inherited the job of national coach from Englishman Gary Johnson in 2001. Starkovs had been Johnson's assistant throughout two qualifying campaigns for Euro 2000 and World Cup 2002.
Since assuming charge Starkovs has translated his success as boss of Skonto Riga to the international stage.
Moulding his team around a solid defence, their counter-attacking style has caught many teams out, not least Turkey in the Euro 2004 play-offs.
Starkovs' playing career was spent mainly as a striker with Daugava Riga, Latvia's top team in the 70s.
He has been manager at Skonto since 1992, winning 11 successive Latvian league titles.
Did you know? Starkovs became the first Latvian to score over 100 goals in the Soviet top flight.
