Dick Advocaat had threatened to quit if Holland failed to overcome Scotland in their Euro 2004 play-off. A thumping 6-0 win in the second leg meant the former Rangers manager, nicknamed the "little general", extended his second stint in charge.
Both spells have been troubled by fall-outs with top players.
He guided Holland to the 1994 World Cup last eight and lost just once between taking over again in November 2002 and Euro 2004 qualification a year later.
At club level, Advocaat won the championship and Dutch Cup with PSV Eindhoven, and a domestic treble in his first season with Rangers.
He was twice voted manager of the year in Scotland. However his time with the Glaggow giants was undermined by rumours of dressing-room cliques and favouritism to Dutch signings.
Did you know? He is nicknamed the "little general", due to his uncompromising style.
