| Marks out of 10 for England after their Euro 2004 quarter-final against Portugal in Lisbon. England David James - 6: Scared the life out of England fans every time a cross came in, but made important saves from Maniche and Figo. Could do little about the goals. Gary Neville - 8: Dealt with the threat of Figo and Ronaldo well and continued his impressive form in the tournament once again with some tough tackling. Sol Campbell - 9: A massive presence in the heart of defence - one tremendous tackle on Ronaldo on the edge of the box typified his display. Incredibly unlucky to have a last-minute goal ruled out. John Terry - 8: Guilty of defending far too deep when his team-mates tried to push up, but grew in stature and gave a solid and assured performance. Ashley Cole - 9 (STAR MAN):Can't defend? Cole was England's rock, making a superb double block from Ronaldo early on and saving England on numerous occasions, including a goal-line clearance in extra-time. David Beckham - 5: Another disappointing display - lethargic and at times appeared uninterested, despite the prize on offer. Not good enough from the England skipper, who failed in the penalty shoot-out. Paul Scholes - 6: Caught in possession a little too often, found it difficult to influence the game as he became isolated on the left and was replaced before the hour. Steven Gerrard - 6: Jaded, tired performance and struggled to impose himself in the middle of the park - was moved to the left when Phil Neville came on, but continued to fade. Frank Lampard - 7: Appeared nervy, frequently gave the ball away cheaply early on and found the going tough against a fluent Portuguese midfield. But came good with a goal when England needed him most. Wayne Rooney - 6: Began energetically and threateningly, looked as though he would make again make a big impact until he limped off with a foot injury. Michael Owen - 7: Fantastic spin and shot to put England ahead and tirelessly chased lost causes - was forced deep as the game went on and lost effectiveness. SubstitutesDarius Vassell - 6 (replaced Rooney, 27 mins): Was asked to lead the line after Rooney was forced off but was starved of service as England found themselves pinned back. Phil Neville - 5 (replaced Scholes, 57 mins): Attempted to stiffen the midfield and added some rigidity but was too easily shrugged off by Rui Costa for Portugal's second goal. Owen Hargreaves - 6 (replaced Gerrard, 81 mins): Desperately tried to provide an outlet to relieve the pressure as Portugal poured forward and had some success down the left.
