Midfielder Nicky Butt has told Sven-Goran Eriksson why he is worth a place in the Euro 2004 starting line-up. Butt could lose his regular spot in coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's line-up to Chelsea's Frank Lampard after a disappointing season.
"It could be difficult against the French when there is so much attacking flair in their team," he said.
"We might need someone more defensive on the pitch. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed I'm selected again."
Captain David Beckham and Steven Gerrard look certain starters in the England midfield.
But Butt and Lampard are not sure of their places and even Paul Scholes, who has not scored for England in three years, said on Sunday he could not blame Eriksson for leaving him out.
Lampard's sparkling performances for Chelsea this season have increased his chances of claiming a place in England's first game against holders France in Lisbon on 13 June.

Butt has been unable to hold down a regular place in the Manchester United side this season, but he still feels he can do a job for his country. "I've had a bit of a dodgy season, with not playing and stuff, and obviously the thing with Frank, who's had such a good season, is that people are pushing for him, which I can understand," the 29-year-old added.
"Fortunately for me, Frank's biggest strength, and the same goes for Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard, is going forward.
"I'm totally the opposite. I'm someone who sits and protects the back four.
"It all depends on the opponents you're against and the system you're playing.
"It's hard for me to sit here and say I should or shouldn't play, because I can appreciate why people might not share that view, but I know my capabilities.
