Pierluigi Collina bowed out of international football after refereeing the Euro 2004 semi-final between the Czech Republic and Greece. Collina - widely regarded as the world's top referee - turns 45 in February next year, the mandatory age for retirement at international level.
The Italian has enjoyed much success during his 12-year career at the top.
He took charge of the 1996 Olympic final, the 1999 Champions League final and the 2002 World Cup final.
Collina has refused to comment on rumours linking him with a move to the English Premiership.
