Keane's last Spurs goal came in the League Cup against Arsenal
Robbie Keane's proposed move from Tottenham to Birmingham is some way from being finalised, according to the Blues' first-team coach Peter Grant.
The clubs are in talks over the striker with Spurs manager Harry Redknapp confirming City have bid about £7m.
However, Grant, who coached the 30-year-old when he was on loan at Celtic last season, said: "There are a lot of bridges to be crossed."
Redknapp has insisted that any move for Keane must be permanent.
"He's not going out on loan, he either goes permanently or stays with us," stated Redknapp.
Keane has scored one goal in 12 club matches this season and has struggled to dislodge Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko from the first team.
The Republic of Ireland international, who scored 16 goals on loan at Celtic last season, has also been linked with West Ham and Wolves.
Blues boss Alex McLeish has prioritised bolstering his forward line in the January transfer window with his current set of attackers struggling to find the net.
Only Wigan have scored fewer than Birmingham's 20 Premier League goals this term.
Midfielder Craig Gardner is the club's top-scorer with five goals while strikers Nikola Zigic, Kevin Phillips and Cameron Jerome have contributed a meagre eight goals between them.
Grant added: "The manager would love a talent like Robbie Keane to come to Birmingham but there are a lot of clubs looking at him.
"Alex has inquired about him, that is open knowledge, as he has done so about a lot of players.
"[But] there is no such thing as a medical having been put in place."
Keane, who has also played for Wolves, Coventry, Inter Milan, Leeds and Liverpool during his wide-ranging career, is eager to secure more time on the field.
