West Bromwich Albion manager Roberto di Matteo said his side's sloppy finishing cost them dear against Bolton.
The Baggies created the better chances throughout the match at the Reebok but a late goal for the home side helped Owen Coyle's side secure a 2-0 success.
"It seems that it is not the first time where we had the majority of possession and created the better chances," Di Matteo told BBC Sport.
"We have to be more clinical otherwise you get punished."
He added: "We are scratching our heads a bit; we had more chances but we know that it's our weakness.
"As long as we keep creating then we will take them sooner or later. We hit the post, had one-on-ones and had one cleared off the line but you need a little bit of luck sometimes.
"We are trying very hard and putting a lot of effort in. We have to move on and get this game out of our system."
Bolton manager Owen Coyle admitted his side were below par and gave credit to the Baggies.
"They are a very good side, are pleasing on the eye and have very good players but we knew if we could keep a clean sheet we have a good goal threat," Coyle said.

"We weren't at our maximum but we scored two good goals and won and that was the most important thing.
"Their better chances came when were 1-0 up and whether we subconsciously looked to play on the break, I don't know.
"But it's very pleasing to have won knowing we can play better."
Coyle also praised his side's togetherness after they paid tribute to absent team-mate Tamir Cohen, whose father Avi who is seriously ill in hospital after a road accident.
"Tamir is back home to be with his dad," Coyle said.
"He is in our prayers and the way they marked the [second] goal shows how together we are as a squad. Tamir is a very close friend to them."
