Carlo Ancelotti says Chelsea loss 'would be a tragedy'

Ancelotti calls for Chelsea focus

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has warned his players there is no room for error against Wigan as they aim to win their first Premier League title since 2006.

The Blues are one point clear of rivals Manchester United, knowing they will be champions with victory over the Latics.

But, if Chelsea fail to win on Sunday, United would seal a record fourth successive title if they beat Stoke.

"It would be a tragedy, a disaster, if we lost the last game after 10 months of a fantastic job," said Ancelotti.

"Everyone wants to win. Everyone wants to win on Sunday because this club has not won the title for some time. Now we are very close and everyone, I'm sure, will do his best to win this title."

Ancelotti's side are two games away from securing the Double, with the FA Cup final against Portsmouth to come at Wembley on 15 May.

The Chelsea boss, who is in his first season in English football added ahead of his side's final league game of the campaign: "We just have to win. We have to score one more goal than Wigan. We're not interested in the other records. We want to win and be champions. That's all.

"We have played with continuity. We didn't fall off in the very important games, beating the other members of the 'top four' in our six games. For that reason, I believe that we deserve to stay top of the list."

And the 50-year-old Italian, who replaced temporary manager Guus Hiddink at Stamford Bridge last summer, is delighted his side's title destiny is in their own hands.

"We are in a very good situation," stated Ancelotti.

"We wanted to arrive at the end of the season with more points. We have one more [than Manchester United], but we can decide our own destiny at our home ground, Stamford Bridge, and that is a good thing.

"We have to play one more game, though, and nothing is decided yet.

"But we have a great opportunity and a great possibility because the team is fit, in good condition and has fantastic motivation for this game."

Despite the furore which surrounded Chelsea skipper John Terry being stripped of the England captaincy following allegations about his private life and the loss of left-back Ashley Cole to injury, Ancelotti insisted his first season in England has not been a difficult one.

"The most important thing is that, when the problems came, we were able to move on quickly," the Blues boss stressed.

"This season, really, I didn't have strong problems to resolve. We had some difficulties, lost some games, and had difficult moments after the Manchester City and Inter defeats, but we moved on very quickly.

"Ash and John Terry had personal issues but they were able to keep these problems outside this training ground, so I never spoke about the personal issues of my players."

Lampard claims Chelsea have the momentum

Wigan, safe from the threat of relegation to the Championship, will look to become only the third side to take points off Chelsea at the Bridge this season.

The Latics beat the west Londoners 3-1 at the DW Stadium on 29 September and former AC Milan boss Ancelotti is aware of the threat Roberto Martinez's side possesses.

"Wigan are a good team and have a lot of skill up front. They are quick and created a lot of difficulties against us. I remember that well", stated Ancelotti.

Martinez, meanwhile, has promised Wigan will not do the west Londoners any favours.

"A strong performance at Stamford Bridge is an important way to finish the season," the Latics boss stressed.

"I do not really care who wins the title, I am only interested in what we do and how we play.

"We are not going to just turn up and be another team at Stamford Bridge.

"We will approach it in a manner where we want to hurt Chelsea on the day.

"It is going to be difficult but the players have huge belief that we can go to Stamford Bridge and make things very, very difficult."
