Stoke striker Ricardo Fuller (second left) is mobbed by team-mates after his winner against Portsmouth
Fuller (second left) is congratulated after scoring the only goal of the game

By Mandeep Sanghera

Ex-Portsmouth striker Ricardo Fuller made his old club pay for a penalty miss as he hit Stoke's winner against the Premier League's bottom club.

Kevin-Prince Boateng saw his tame spot-kick for Pompey easily saved by keeper Thomas Sorensen after Rory Delap's foul on Aruna Dindane.

The visitors were the more threatening side but went behind when Fuller curled in a low shot after a well-worked move.

A dejected Pompey failed to recover as Stoke held on for a hard-fought win.

The defeat will be a further bodyblow to Pompey after a match in which they showed plenty of desire and effort knowing victory would move them off the foot of the top-flight standings.

I was about to substitute my match-winner - Pulis

But they failed to turn their graft into goals and were beaten by a quality goal that was in contrast to most of Stoke's play as the home side ground out a first win in four league outings.

Pompey's cause had not been helped when keeper David James injured a calf in the warm up and had to be replaced by Jamie Ashdown.

The problem will only increase England manager Fabio Capello's worries over the 39-year-old's fitnees but the setback appeared to have little impact on Portsmouth as they made a lively opening and should have taken the lead.

Delap's high boot brought down Dindane and, after referee Kevin Friend awarded the visitors a penalty, Boateng struck a weak shot to allow Sorensen to comfortably gather.

606: DEBATE

However, Pompey continued with their high-energy play as they harried Stoke out of possession, while playing with a sense of purpose and urgency.

The visitors conceded three goals from set pieces in a defeat by Blackburn last time out and Stoke will have been hoping to use their aerial threat to take advantage of this perceived weakness.

But Portsmouth's defenders were in a more forceful mood this time around and dealt with any balls into the box with a no-nonsense approach.

Stoke were struggling to impress their physical game on Pompey, who continued to look the more likely to score as Jamie O'Hara had a swerving shot palmed round the post by Sorensen.

We'll get out of this - Hart

Dindane also sent a difficult volley on the turn wide after Michael Brown looped a ball over the Stoke defence.

The fear of the visiting contingent would have been that one lapse in concentration or a mistake could undo their good work.

Instead, it was a moment of brilliance from Stoke as Matthew Etherington and Dean Whitehead combined with some slick one-touch passing to set up Fuller.

He turned on the edge of the box and curled in a strike which Ashdown got a hand to but could not stop going in.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis:
"I thought the first half was as poor as we have played and Thomas (Sorensen) has changed the game with his penalty save.

"We were a little bit better in the second half and it was a great three points for us.

"It was a quality goal, a quality move and a quality finish."
