Brown calls for final Hull push

A great point for Hull - Brown

Hull boss Phil Brown says his players need to show the same commitment as in the draw at Bolton to have a chance of securing their Premier League status.

The Tigers are a point above the drop zone but play champions Manchester United on the final day of the season.

"I am not expecting any favours from Man United next week. We have to put a similar kind of performance to the Bolton game in," said Brown.

"The point at Bolton puts our destiny back in our own hands."

United could choose to field a changed line-up for the last round of league matches after securing the title with a draw at home against Arsenal on Saturday.

But Brown added: "There will be suggestions of weakened sides coming our way but as we have seen against Bolton, nobody does you any favours in the Premier League.

"We could quite easily name two or three teams Sir Alex Ferguson could put out. That is the ability of that football club."

Hull dropped into the bottom three after Newcastle beat Middlesbrough last Monday.

But the draw at Bolton was enough to see them move back out of the drop zone by a point from Newcastle, who lost at home to Fulham.

"We were dumped in the bottom three in no uncertain terms by Newcastle United," said Brown.

"We had to respond and like true professionals they responded and I was quite proud of the performance at Bolton.

"I don't think we deservedly got a point out of it, I think we probably should have had three. It was a well fought out scrap.

"It slipped out of our hands and that is not a nice feeling. It is now back in our hands, albeit having to win against the champions."

Megson praises his depleted squad

Hull had gone behind at the Reebok stadium after a Gretar Steinsson strike before Craig Fagan equalised.

The Tigers might have won the game but for two superb saves from Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen as he brilliantly denied Daniel Cousin and Fagan.

"Special mention to my two mates on the Bolton team," said Brown.

"Everyone was levelling suggestions of some kind of favours at me before the game but the best players on the park, outside the Hull players, were Jaaskelainen and Kevin Davies.

"He's been there all season, Jaaskelainen, and probably cost us five points with sterling performances at the KC Stadium and the Reebok."

The draw secured Bolton's top-flight status but boss Gary Megson cited the fact that his side have been all-but safe in recent weeks as the reason for a drop in intensity.

"I am happy we are now mathematically safe and we are in this division, it has been a while coming," he said.

"The performance was better than in the previous two or three but nothing like what we have shown in the previous 31 or 32.

"I think with the fact we have had that cushion between ourselves and the bottom three we have taken our foot off the gas.

"We are not a team that can play without our foot being on the gas.

"We just look a yard slower than where we were a month ago but I think the work Hull have done against us and the intensity they have played at, we were doing that against West Ham and Newcastle 10 or 11 weeks ago."
