Hull 0-0 Portsmouth

By Phil Maiden

Glen Johnson
Johnson leaves the field after being sent off for a second booking

Hull City's poor league form at the KC Stadium continued as they failed to overcome 10-man Portsmouth.

Hull have only won three times at home this season and they were lucky to end the game with a point after a Hermann Hreidarsson header hit the post.

The visitors also wasted a great chance to take a first-half lead when Younes Kaboul headed over from close range.

Pompey's Glen Johnson was sent off after the break for a second booking but Hull were unable to capitalise.

The England international had been booked before the break for a foul on Hull defender Kamil Zayatte, after getting frustrated in his pursuit of the ball in the home side's half.

Hart questions Johnson sending-off

Johnson was then spoken to by referee Chris Foy just a minute later after a late challenge on Geovanni.

The home side's best chance of the first half fell to Manucho but he was unable to connect cleanly with Bernard Mendy's cross and volleyed over from close range.

Hull started well in the second period with Pompey keeper David James having to rush to the edge of his area to cut out the threat of the oncoming Craig Fagan.

Nick Barmby went close to scoring his 100th goal for his hometown club but was unable to connect well enough to head home.

Immediately afterwards David Nugent had a good chance at the other end but his header from Peter Crouch's cross went over the bar when he was through on goal.

Johnson's sending-off would have been expected to give the home side a massive advantage but after Hull mounted pressure on the Pompey defence the visitors went closest to breaking the deadlock.

A half-decent day's work - Brown

Just before full-time Hreidarsson connected with Nadir Belhadj's free-kick but his header hit the post and seconds later the final whistle was blown.

The draw means Portsmouth are unbeaten on the road in their last three outings but for Hull it means they are without a home win since they beat Middlesbrough on 6 December.

Both teams will hope they can build momentum from the draw as they hover dangerously above the relegation zone.

Hull manager Phil Brown:

"We've now got 34 [points] with seven games to go. It pulls us five clear of the relegation zone so all-in-all it's a half-decent day's work.

"We could have nicked it with the real good chance that we had, that was Craig Fagan, but an England international in front of him prevented that from going in.

"As far as I'm concerned a clean sheet is always a good day's work.

"Composure let us down today and you could say the same for Portsmouth."

Portsmouth manager Paul Hart:

"It was always a difficult game with two teams trying to stay in this division. I think overall we're satisfied, we're a little bit tired. There's a lot of players who've done an awful lot this week.

"We could have won it. It was a great header [from Hermann Hreidarsson] and I think it was only an inch and we'd be talking about three points, that's the way it goes.

"The first booking, I thought, was harsh because Glen [Johnson] had been taking a bit of stick and he was coping alright with it but wasn't getting much going his way.

"But the second one, I didn't have a clear view in real time but I've since it since, it's nowhere near a booking."
