Lee Dixon's tactical view

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp was quick to laud Aaron Lennon after he set up the goal in his team's 1-0 win over Blackburn on Sunday.

And based on his performance - which saw him torment Blackburn full-back Martin Olsson into getting a red card - I'd certainly agree with Harry that he is worth a place in the England squad.

Surprisingly, it was Lennon's first league start under Redknapp and we're seeing signs that he is picking his game up now. With Theo Walcott injured there is a little gap that has appeared in the England set-up and that might give him a bit of impetus.

We all know how quick Lennon is, and perhaps his final ball has let him down in the past, but I thought his decision making on Sunday was really good.

He was playing against quite an inexperienced left-back in Olsson, who is only 20, but sometimes it's not always easy. Just because you've got pace and you come up against a young lad, you think you can beat him quite easily but I thought he used his space awareness really well.

What I mean by that is he didn't always front him up. He actually gave Olsson something to think about because Blackburn's left midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen was often way down the pitch leaving huge gaps for Lennon.

And when he saw that, he just stopped and just waited for the ball to come to him.

Time and time again he got the ball in acres of space, turned and then once he is running like that, Olsson was really in no-man's land and that's how he got himself sent off by committing two fouls as Lennon raced past him.

He also switched over to the left which gave him the option of coming back inside on his right foot. I thought a couple of seasons ago that that was his position but on Sunday he proved that he is a threat down the right and provided some great crosses.

The other advantage Lennon has is having Tom Huddlestone inside him, who can hit long passes to the wings.

As a right-sided player, if the ball is on the left-hand side of the pitch, you tend to tuck in a bit and then break forward when the ball comes over to your side. But Huddlestone has the ability to switch it earlier than most players so you can afford to stay wider which then gives the full-back a really big decision to make.

Does he stay close to the centre-backs to help them out or does he abandon them slightly to go and cut out those long passes?

It's tough enough as a full-back in terms of when to go tight or when to drop off the player but you also have to be in control of the wide midfielder in front of you.

Olsson was not in charge of Pedersen at all on Sunday, which basically left him one versus one against Lennon too many times. Yes, Olsson made wrong decisions about when to tackle, but that was forced upon him because he didn't have anybody in front of him.

If Lennon was on the left and I was playing against him, Ray Parlour would have been 10 yards in front of me when the ball was being switched and he would know his job which would be stop Lennon getting the ball to feet.

If Lennon runs on then I take him, but if there is no support then the full-back has two jobs to do.

Individually, you can try to stop Lennon using his pace by getting tight to him.

If I was ever marking a particularly fast winger I would say to Tony Adams, "you're going to have to look after your centre forward on your own for a bit, I'm going to have to do a job on the winger for five or 10 minutes."

That would be just to mess his game up a little bit and make him think 'I'm not getting the ball here, shall I swap wings?'

When someone has that sort of speed you have to try to shake them off their game somehow but Olsson really struggled against Lennon as was shown by his red card.
