Commiserations to Cardiff. Their dressing-room will be the loneliest place in the world after the FA Cup final.

But for Portsmouth, the knowledge that you've just won the FA Cup is simply one of the best feelings you can experience.

Cardiff had two or three great chances in the first half and with a bit more quality and composure they might have been in front.

Portsmouth centre-halves Sol Campbell and Sylvain Distin had a torrid time in the first half but then they sorted it out.

At the other end, Cardiff goalkeeper Peter Enckelman was unfortunate as Kanu's goal sealed it for Portsmouth.

The ball was wet and skiddy and difficult to defend against. But whether Enckelman should have punched it or whatever he could do - he should have done better.

Kanu is a class player. He can't run any more but when he gets on the ball he can go past people with consummate ease.

Harry Redknapp has had an up-and-down season on and off the pitch but he's had a fantastic season. And it's been a very good competition culminating in a good final.

As for Cardiff, they acquitted themselves well and it's essential that they build on this. It all depends on revenue, of course, but if Dave Jones gets two or three players then they can go on and push for promotion.

Off the pitch it's not been a great season for Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp but on it, he's had an outstanding campaign.

He's pulled Portsmouth back into being a big club - now they've won the FA Cup and are in Europe.

Redknapp has a collection of experienced players and that told, particularly in the second half.

Cardiff will wake up disappointed but they can look back on a good FA Cup run. They played their part in the final but ultimately it was Portsmouth's day.

Cardiff asked a lot of questions of Portsmouth in the first half but Portsmouth did what they needed to do; they got the goal, sat on it and defended well.

Kanu had missed an absolute sitter before he scored the winning goal but he made up for that.

Portsmouth did not have to attack on too many occasions, they said "come at us".

When you are the underdog you will get your chances but you have to take them and Cardiff didn't.

If you look at the players Harry Redknapp has brought in to the club, the likes of Kanu, Sol Campbell and David James, you have to say that he has a knack of getting the best out of his players.

Portsmouth only conceded one goal during the FA Cup run and any team that does that deserves to win the trophy.

The Cardiff City players are a proud bunch and you have to take your hat off to them because they've had a terrific run.

They showed no nerves and went out there and entertained in the first half.

But in the second half they ran out of ideas and suffered with a lack of legs and Portsmouth made that pay in the second half.

Harry Redknapp has built his side on experience and it's a very strong side, with a lot of character.

With just the one guy up front, Portsmouth weren't threatening at all apart from when Sylvain Distin made the break into the penalty box and was smothered out.

It was a disappointing spectacle as a football match in the second half but it's still an FA Cup final.

Cardiff tried ever so hard to get back into it, they worked their socks off but they just didn't have that something to break down a very strong defensive performance from Distin and Sol Campbell in the second half.
