Barton and Etuhu clashed during the derby match |
Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has apologised for his dangerous tackle on Sunderland's Dickson Etuhu during Saturday's derby match. The Football Association will not take any action against Barton after he went in with his studs high, but no foul was awarded by referee Martin Atkinson.
"There was no malice in it, nor was it premeditated, if I caused him any injury then I apologise," said Barton.
The two players clashed during the 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light.
An FA spokesman said: "Whilst it is clear the officials did not see the full extent of the incident they did see players coming together.
"To take any further action would be tantamount to re-refereeing the game."
