Jol dismisses Mourinho job report
Martin Jol
Jol's position has been a source of constant speculation this season
Tottenham boss Martin Jol insists talk of Jose Mourinho replacing him is wide of the mark following the Dutchman's talks with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.

Mourinho has been linked Spurs after his shock exit from Chelsea last week.

"Daniel Levy phoned me to say the report was rubbish and hoped I would be with him next year," said Jol. "He is always good to me, always backing me."

Spurs have also rejected claims they are holding crisis talks after a report that Jol has told them he wants to go.

The BBC understands that, contrary to the report in London's Evening Standard on Monday, no such plan currently exists despite Spurs struggling in the bottom three of the Premiership after a string of poor results.

Jol meanwhile put the speculation behind him and was more concerned that his team failed to break down a resolute Bolton side at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday.

"Bolton are more physical and we are technically better. They try to bash you but we coped," he said following the 1-1 stalemate.

With both sides struggling near the bottom of the table, the tension made for an ugly encounter at times.

And Jol was clearly frustrated at not clinching the victory that would have lifted his side out of the drop zone.

Jermain Defoe is a very good striker - he will get his games for us

Spurs manager Martin Jol

"When you go to Bolton you have to cope with their style defensively and when you get the ball you have to try to play football," he stated.

"Paul Robinson didn't make too many saves and we should have taken one or two of our opportunities. If we take our chances then we will be fine."

Jol defended his decision to leave Jermain Defoe out of his 16, despite the striker scoring twice in the Uefa Cup in midweek.

"It was very tough to leave Defoe out but I had Darren Bent who could come on for Keane or Berbatov, whereas Defoe can only come on for Keane," he said.

"Keane has been our top scorer for a few years and can score goals from anywhere.

"Jermain is very good as well but sometimes you have to make tough decisions and he will get his games."

Bolton boss Sammy Lee unearthed an unlikely scorer in veteran midfielder Ivan Campo, who was brought back for his first appearance of the season.

"Ivan came in and was well worth his place," said Lee.

"We know the workload we have got and we need strength in depth and players like him who can step into any game."

Bolton moved off the bottom of the table, thanks to the draw, but Lee was not satisfied.

"It was probably a fair result but I'm greedy and always want to win," he added.

"It is obvious the position we are in and the pressure we are under but it's the same for any manager.

"We were up against a spirited Spurs side and the commitment of both sides was admirable. We both look to play football but there were obvious signs of nervousness.

"Our position is not the best but once we respond and get some results that confidence will return."
