Sales of programmes for each of the 20 Premiership clubs' final home games of the season included a 50p donation to the charity for every programme sold.

Liverpool stars Michael Owen, Sami Hyypia and Steven Gerrard led the campaign and were celebrating themselves after securing a Champions League place.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "By buying the match programme at this weekend's games, Premier League football fans have played an important part in making Sport Relief a success.

He added: "The Premier League and its clubs are committed to using the power of football to tackle social exclusion, raise educational standards and promote community involvement."

It is the first time in Premier League history that all 20 clubs have donated money from programme sales in one week to the same charity.

Sport Relief is aiming to tackle poverty and disadvantage, both in the UK and in some of the poorest countries around the world.

Sport Relief was set up by Comic Relief and BBC Sport and in 2002 raised more than �14 million for good causes.

Sport Relief returns on Saturday July 10th with the biggest Mile event in history - the Fitness First Sport Relief Mile, staged at 14 venues across the country.
